What is a habitation check and what does it involve?

Checklist

A habitation check on your leisure vehicle is an inspection of the living area and is sometimes referred to as an MOT of your leisure vehicle. It gives the user peace of mind knowing that your camper van or motorhome is in a good, safe condition and helps discover and resolve any issues before they develop into more costly and larger problems.

A habitation check is very helpful when you plan to sell your camper van or motorhome and we would always recommend that one was carried out prior to you purchasing, we can carry out a pre-purchase inspection.

Purchasing a campervan or motorhome is a big decision and you need to know that what you are purchasing is sound and habitable without any surprises such as repair work or dampness.

Why do I need a habitation check?

Currently it is not a legal requirement however your manufacturing warranty may be invalidated if you do not get one carried out annually. If you are renting out your campervan or motorhome it may be necessary as some Self Drive Hire insurance companies do request annual habitations. Check with your manufacturer and your insurance company.

Just like your house there are components which require to be checked and any issues can either be prevented or stopped before they become large costly repairs by having your habitation carried out.

Is there a particular time of year I should get my habitation carried out?

Any time of the year is suitable and we are open all year however winter, especially in the UK can be detrimental to a campervan or motorhome. It is best practise to ensure that you empty the fresh water tank fully before the first frost of the year and keep the tap open to prevent the pipes from bursting just like your house.  Even the most organised of us can forget to do so, we are here to assist if problems arise due to lack of winterization of your leisure vehicle. It is the most common cause of issues and is easily prevented if you carry out some simple procedures.
